Who are the Aryans?
The Aryan Nations is a Christian Identity racist hate group founded by Richard Butler. One of their main goals is to establish a new white supremacy homeland in northern Idaho. They are a coalition of KKK old timers, young neo-nazis and right-wing/anti-government extremists. The goal of the Aryan Nations parade is to spread hate.

The Aryans Nations use hate propaganda, fear, and terrorism to intimidate our people who value a free and diverse world. They are particularly dangerous due to their long history of violent crimes and their outreach programs in schools and police departments. They also target middle-class/extraction oriented hard working Americans. Unfortunately, these vulnerable people become easy prey due to years of being beat down by the Establishment and our nations lack of community support networks.

THE PEOPLE'S STANCE
The people of Idaho do not want violent hate groups in their back yard and neither should the rest of the nation. Unfortunately, our government representatives are either right-wing extremists or impotent and scared to take a decisive stance in defense of their constituents. Last summer, our political leaders preached a strategy of ignorance -"let's hand over the city for the day and pretend that racists do not exist here". This summer, let's declare the entire nation, even the most remote corners of Idaho, a "zero-tolerance for hate" zone. Let's show the whole world, through our voice and our physical presence, that we directly and actively oppose hate while simultaneously promoting a pro-diversity agenda. In this age of school massacres, international genocide, and unspoken racism, we need the help of the nation to stamp out hate.

Perhaps the Aryans have a right to parade. We have the honor, privilege and duty to counter-demonstrate. Using our presence, we can take the opportunity to 1) prevent hate groups from infecting our youth with violence (which played a part in the Columbine Massacre), 2) lobby for greater 'hate crime' legislation, and 3) protest all forms of genocide (whether it's ethnic cleansing of ethnic Albanians in Yugoslavia, or Clinton's genocidal military agenda).

To protect our communities from infringing racial hatred, we need to stand up and say "NO! You are not welcome here".

What is ARA, Moscow?

ARA, Moscow is a local-based group that organizes and takes action against racism and is for diversity. Charged with action, ARA promotes democracy, social justice and an appreciation for culture and helps communities counter the effort of 'hate' extremists to undermine democracy.

The group was formed immediately after a Moscow house of anti-racist/pro-diversity activists was firebombed, a cross-burned on the yard and a hate letter left in the mailbox on December 1, 1998.

ARA, Moscow is currently lobbying for greater 'hate crime' legislation, giving input to the new parade ordinance laws, and actively outreaching to the surrounding communities.

The four principles of Anti-Racist Network (ARANET)

1) WE GO WHERE THEY GO.
Wherever the fascists are organizing or active in public, we're there. We don't believe in ignoring them or staying away from them. We will never let the Nazis have the streets.

2) WE DON'T RELY ON THE COPS OR THE COURTS.
This doesn't mean we don't ever go to court or work with the police. But we must rely on ourselves to protect ourselves and stop the fascists.

3) NON-SECTARIAN DEFENSE OF OTHER ANTI-FASCISTS
In ARANET we have lots of groups and individuals. We don't agree about everything, and we have the right to differ openly. But in the movement AN ATTACK ON ANY ONE OF US IS AN ATTACK ON ALL. We all stand behind each other.

4) ARANET INTENDS TO DO THE HARD WORK NECESSARY TO BUILD A STRONG, BROAD MOVEMENT AGAINST RACISM, SEXISM, ANTI-SEMITISM, HOMOPHOBIA, DISCRIMINATION AGAINST THE DISABLED, THE OLDEST, THE YOUNGEST, AND THE WEAKEST OF OUR PEOPLE. WE DEFEND ABORTION RIGHTS AND SUPPORT UNRESTRICTED REPRODUCTIVE FREEDOM FOR ALL. WE INTEND TO WIN.

ARA, Moscow is now working hard to prepare for this summer's parade. We want to organize a strong, coordinated counter-demonstration to oppose hate and racism and promote a pro-diversity agenda. We believe that all individuals, organizations, church groups, businesses-EVERYONE needs to join together and stand up for our communities. An informal meeting/strategy session will happen in late May and the coalition of groups organizing the counter-demonstration will be open to new ideas and new people up until the day of the parade (July 10, 1999). Please participate and give your input.

What happened at last year's parade?
Hundreds of police officers from multiple departments were deployed to protect the Aryans and suppress the efforts of the courageous counter-demonstrators. Over one-thousand people attended the counter-demonstration outnumbering the Aryans more than 10:1. Over twenty people were arrested; many illegally. The Kops constructed a fiction about stolen explosives and threats of violence which intended to scare away people who wanted to exercise their constitutional rights. The Kops did everything to ensure that the Aryans had a successful parade and one of their means was to arrest anyone who looked like an agitator or troublemaker. They forcibly searched many people and citizens who refused to dissolve their 4th Amendment rights were dragged off the scene. It was a case where the politicians and law enforcement were very accommodating to the Aryans and very brutal to peaceful dissenters.

Five people have collectively mounted a 13.3 million dollar lawsuit against the City of Coeur d'Alene, the City's Attorneys Office, the Coeur d'Alene Police Department, and several individual police officers. The plaintiffs have already settled with Kootenai County for $80,000.

Following last summers parade a wave of hate crimes occurred including mass mailings of anti-semitic posters, newspapers, and a video of the 1998 Aryan Nations parade and multiple cross-burnings from Spokane, Washington to the small community of Moscow, Idaho.
